INFORMATION FOR MEDIA

John Phillip Walker Lindh is scheduled to be sentenced at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 4, 2002 in Courtroom 900 on the 9th floor of the Albert V. Bryan United States District Courthouse, 401 Courthouse Square, Alexandria, Virginia.

Please note the sentencing was originally scheduled for 9 a.m.

Fifty seats have been reserved for sketch artists and representatives of news organizations that have covered all the pretrial hearings in this case. Representatives from other news organizations will be placed on a waiting list which will be created at the door of the courtroom after seating begins and seated if there is space available.

If all organizations on the waiting list cannot be seated, priority will be given to those with the largest audiences. Only one representative of each news organization will be seated, unless additional media seats remain after representatives of all news organizations have entered the courtroom.

Seating for this hearing will begin at noon. The 9th floor will closed until that time. Seating from the waiting list will begin at 1:30 p.m. All spectators must be seated by 1:45 p.m.

All media activity surrounding the courthouse must take place in the City of Alexandria's media center lot, opposite Courthouse Square from the courthouse. Please note this is a change from prior hearings in this case, when cameras were allowed to setup on Courthouse Square itself.

All media satellite and microwave trucks must park on the media center lot. Trucks can enter the lot during the following hours:

Thursday, October 3: Noon to 8 p.m.
Friday, October 4: 4 a.m. to 2 p.m.

On-street parking for personal vehicles in the immediate vicinity of the courthouse is virtually non-existent. A lot operated by the City of Alexandria at 2395 Mill Road, located one block west of the courthouse, will be available on October 3 and 4 for public and media crew parking. It will be open from 5 am to 11 pm, and the daily fee is $10. To reach the media parking lot from Old Town Alexandria, head west on Duke Street, taking a left onto Holland Lane. Go through the traffic circle, turning right onto Eisenhower Avenue. Turn right onto Mill Road. At the intersection of Jamieson Avenue, turn left to continue on Mill Road. The parking lot will be on your right, just past the Metrorail overpass.

Directions to the courthouse and public transportation options are listed on the Court's web site: www.vaed.uscourts.gov.

Everyone attending the sentencing will be required to pass through two security checkpoints: at the entrance to the courthouse and at the entrance to the courtroom. A photo ID issued by a government agency, such as a drivers license, is required to enter the courthouse. A photo ID issued by your news organization is required to enter the courtroom.

You will not be allowed to enter the courthouse with cellular telephones, Palm Pilots, Blackberry e-mail devices, pagers, cameras, tape recorders, laptop computers or any other electronic device. Potential weapons such as firearms, knives, pocket knives, scissors, letter openers, screw drivers, mace and pepper spray are also prohibited.

Because of limited space in the courtroom, briefcases, backpacks and large handbags will not be permitted in the hearing. Coat racks are available in the corridor for these items. The court is not responsible for lost or damaged personal belongings.
